Alice in Wonder-Winter-Island
It probably looks like a rather posh title, but it takes an impressive introduction to the following text! Let’s be honest, I have long realized that my writing skills are as advanced as a Homo Neanderthal with a laptop, so don’t expect to discover a Hemingway, in this little text. Yet, there is something that expects to be discovered!
I am not trying to describe the summery profile of Spetses, it has already been praised in adjacent articles. Any attempt to add even a word, will be a disaster.
I will describe though, my first experience during the winter, in Spetses. I was not lucky enough to spend the very first years of my life on Spetses. Nevertheless, I was lucky enough to start spending time here, at my childhood. A period in our lives, that pictures, sounds and fragrances occupy the inner part of our Soul and grow so strong that can affect our future choices.
Beautiful summers went by, as I was realizing, my existence. But the first winter I spent on this island was a Revelation! Without any autobiographical mood, I will try to describe the Winter Profile of Spetses, according to the effect it had to me and to all those who haven’t taken as a granted this beauty.
Have you heard of the misery that often pollutes the hearts of people in counties? Well, this simply doesn’t happen in Spetses! This land has a magic indefinable touch that can travel you to the Wonder Land… Your own Wonder Land!
Let’s start by admitting that the weather forecasts simply do not apply on Spetses! Only a 20% of the bad-weather forecasts are valid! The scientists go crazy and the weather man on TV starts sobering, but the fact remains the same… Spetses is located in Greece but tends to a more tropical climate. The comparison is so intent that you may catch yourself glancing above, worrying that a coconut might land on your head!
Moreover, when the weather reminds us the real longitude and latitude of Spetses, Nature rewards us by revealing spectacular pictures!
The colour of the sea turns to grey-blue, much similar to the shades of the winter sky. The North Wind just like a fighter rushes to the island’s neighborhoods and hammers any shutters that were left open. The waves of the Sea burst on the coast which resistless gives up to their strength.
The Sea is an entity, and declares it by constantly changing its look and by playing around with the traditional boats hidden to a small bay. People here aren’t afraid to let the hard North Wind touch their faces, or the sudden storm that polishes the red tiles on housetops. The ground is longing for the Rain, and it’s getting ready to reveal scented bushes and rainbow-tinted wild flowers.
The Pine forest allows rain to slip on the ancient dark green leaves and with the awareness of its wisdom lets time go by.
The rain stops, the wind soothes down and the scenery cleaner and brighter than ever seems to flaunt at the sight of some sunrays that sneaked through the big clouds. The locals –alike the ancient Greek Insiders- take long walks along the sea and renew their secret vows to the island of Spetses…
The secret of the mystery, the key to open the Heaven’s Door, is here…waiting to fall in your hands…
